Men, women and children took a holy dip in the Ganges or other natural sources of water.men, on Dev Deepawali and Kartik Purnima.
Nalanda./CR.On the auspicious occasion of Kartik Purnima and Dev Deepawali devotees including men, women and children took a holy dip in the Ganges or other natural sources of water. People of Nalanda who could not go to the Ganges took a holy dip on the different river banks and ponds and some other sources of water like holy kunds of Rajgrih etc.
A large gathering of people could be seen on the different river banks and holy ponds of the district like Kosuk, Baba Maniram Akhara pond, Maghra pond, Mora Talab, Badgaon pond, Rajgrih kunds, Hilsa, Islampur, Ekangarsarai etc. A fair like scene could have been seen there. Though CORONA pandemic has taken the whole world into its grip but people's religious faith overcame the fear of pandemic. It seemed that they were not in a mood to follow the government norms and CORONA guidelines very seriously.
Kartik is considered to a holy month in Hindu mythology. Many people do not eat non-veg food or even garlic and onion. Many Hindu festivals like Karva Chauth, Deepawali, Chhath, Bhaiya Dooj,Chitragupta Pooja, and Dev Deepawali etc are celebrated in this month. Some people take a bath in the Ganges through the entire Kartik month (October- November) and follow many restrictions in their life and food. People worship Lord Vishnu on this day.

Sonpur Mela in a HT photographer's eyes.
Patna /CR : Being a staff phtographer of Hindustan Times, Patna edition I used to go to Sonpur every year and shot the Sonpur in different angles. So naturally
my eyes are of my camera and my descriptions are my clicked photos.

Sonpur is a small city and sub-division in the Indian state of Bihar, situated on the banks of sacred river Gandak (Narayani) and the Ganges River in Saran district. Once this city was famous for longest railway platform. Its fair which is very much popular, vibrant and colorful fair held on Kartik Poornima (full moon) day on the confluence river Ganga and Gandak about 20 kms across Ganga river North of Patna, the convergences of these sacred river regarded as holy site among the Hindus. Basically it is peasant fair and people from far off places even offshore countries come to see it. But now the distant shortened due to new rail and Road Bridge came up from Digha in Patna to Sonpur directly. It is also popularly known as Harihar Kshetra Mela. Its main attraction is the biggest cattle fair, which consists of elephants, cows, buffalos, birds and puppies of different species, horses and many more. This fair lasts fifteen days to a month in duration.
As per
folklore Chandragupta Maurya (340-297 BCE) bought elephants and horses across
the river Ganges for trading and it
attracted traders from far off places of Central Asia and it is still
continuing. Previously this fair was celebrated in Hajipur across the river Gandak
and 3Kms east of Sonpur and the puja was performed at the temple of Harihar
Nath in Sonpur, but it is Moughal
Emperor Aurangzeb who shifted the fair from Hajipur to Sonpur. There is belief
that the Harihar Nath temple was built by Lord Rama. So the sentiments of
Hindus are with this fair. But the temple which stands today is built by Raja
Ram Narain a very popular and influential person during Moughal period.
Folklore : There is
very popular folklore about the fight of Gaj (elephant) and Grah (crocodile)
which was ended by the help of Lord Vishnu after killing the Crocodile. This
fair also attracts youngsters from villages and surrounding areas to see the
performance of nautch girls in different theaters and for ladies buying
different and colorful bangles, utilities etc.
As I lived
in Patna so this fair always attracted me and I used to go there with my
photographer friends by motorcycles very early in the morning to catch the early
morning oblations of the devotees and the rising sun. Later for convenience I
stayed in hotels in Hajipur and use to walk across the Gandak Bridge in the very
early morning to catch the scene of rising sun which makes very attractive
picture. Early morning picture always considered photographers delight. There
is complete dearth of accommodations in Sonpur, so I use to stay at hotels in
Hajipur during the periods.
Bihar Government also provides beautiful
accommodations in the midst of fair but I found those always full. Now the time
is nearby for this colorful fair, I hope it will again attract many tourists
but with a caution of pandemic this year.

And the virtue of Dev Deepawali is full of mythology. Raising the life of Demon Tripurasur, who harassed everyone, by Lord Shankar, was done on prayer, which led to the celebration of Diwali by the gods and goddesses. This victory over evil forces was recognized as Dev Diwali in the family of gods. We usually celebrate Deepawali on the night of Kartik Amavas, then Deepawali by Dev is celebrated on the night of Kartik Purnamasi. Deep is supposed to be the symbol of joy, light, holiness, knowledge and purity from which darkness and ignorance are distracted and our life remains full of light.
According to this tradition, Lord Vishnu is worshiped by some deities by lighting the numerous lamps in the feet of Kashi, and thereafter Dev Diwali is organized.
For the last five years, the Dhaneshwar Ghat Mohalla Dev Deepavali Organizing Committee has been making meaningful efforts to revive the mythological tradition in the temple complex pond. In the event of Dev Deepavali in which thousands of people gather, donating thousand lamps, worshiping the symbolic water sources, such as the ponds and lakes. And keep on giving the message that water is life and we should keep doing our best to keep the water bodies clean and clean.

Unforgettable Year of 2016. It has been an evidant and unforgettable year in 2016 when SP Nalanda, Aashish Kumar and Mayor of Biharsharif municipality, Sudhir Kumar consented to be the chief guest of this ritual ceremony and stayed till the last enchanted mantras.

Kartik Purnima is the important day of Guru Purnima. As the day progressed, the movement of people started gathering near the Dhaneshwar Ghat Talav located in the temple attendant. The work of organizing with Ganga Aarti becomes auspicious under the supervision of the active members of the Ganga Aarti Organizing Committee.
As soon as dusk comes, the pond located in the temple complex, remains very devotional, it is worth watching the stage decoration and the preparation around the Talav. As the sun sets, activities begin to grow under the supervision of the organizing committee's patrons, president, secretary, and workers. The stage is usually operated by Prof. Ashutosh Sharan, a resident of Dhaneshwar Ghat mohalla. In the devotional environment, people coming from the castle rate after rate. The crowd start gathering around this complex, Talav. Women, children, large devotees have huge lamps in their hands.
Those who are sure to burn the queue of the lamps on the stairs of the premises of Talav at night have been gathered in a large number with this message, we should understand the importance of water bodies in our lives and keep it clean.
Enchanting the mantras : Soon the Pandits and priests from Baidyanath Dham and Varanasi start the program by enchanting the mantras beneath the guide line of a local priest Mr. Akhilanand Pandey, followed lighting the lamp by the religious crowd in this talav campus, after which Advocate Seema Kumari chants 'Jai Jai Bhagirath Nandini Shloka' takes the attraction of all the people present. Various artists from the city and far away, such as Khushboo, Julie, Vinay, Prasoon, Arun, etc., under the keen observation of a local musician Mr. K.K. Sinha attend the event by singing various shlokas, songs and bhajans to preserve the Ganga and its sanctity. It leaves no stone unturned to delight the standing crowd. As time goes on, members of the local artist ,committee members and all the people remain there to enhance the program. And shortly after, with the chanting of mantras, innumerable deeps water placed on the stairs of the campus lock rose, so that the beauty of the campus pond was rekindled.
It dots itself so as a successful and unprecedented event of Dev Deepawali taking place in the temple complex pond in Biharsharif, Dhaneshwar Ghat, is always witnessed by thousands of people and the people witness this live event in devotional environment. Here we present you a series of photos of different years.
